Choptank Health Delivers Fresh Produce Packs to Caroline County Summer Campers

Choptank Community Health System’s school-based health team made sure students stayed healthy this past summer—with more than just medical care.

Each Caroline County Recreation and Parks summer camper received a reusable bag loaded with locally sourced produce and a recipe card for a healthy corn and tomato salad through a partnership between Choptank Health’s school-based health care team, the Caroline County Health Department, Caroline County Public Schools’ food services, and Caroline County Recreation and Parks.

Thanks to grant support and a team of community partners, Choptank’s nutrition care team members packed bags of locally sourced produce and a recipe card for a healthy corn and tomato salad.

Each camper in Caroline County Recreation and Parks' summer program received a fresh produce pack in a reusable bag.

This effort was made possible through partnerships with the Caroline County Health Department, Caroline County Public Schools’ food services, and Caroline County Recreation and Parks.

Choptank Health operates 18 school-based health centers and a mobile health unit, serving more than 8,000 students annually. Services include medical, dental, behavioral health, and nutrition care in Caroline and Talbot counties; dental services in Dorchester; and medical and dental care in Queen Anne’s and Kent.

These centers are a collaboration between Choptank Health, the Maryland Department of Health, county health departments, and public school systems. Care is coordinated with each student’s primary care provider and dentist.

Students can receive in-person, virtual, and curbside care during the school year and summer. Services include treatment for illnesses, behavioral health support, nutrition counseling, and education.

Choptank’s school-based dental programs offer screenings, cleanings, fluoride treatments, oral health education, and emergency referrals.

“A healthy student is a better learner,” said Chrissy Bartz, PA-C, Choptank Health’s director of community-based programs. “We’re grateful to partner with all five Mid-Shore school systems to meet students with care directly where they are.”

Enrollment in school-based health care is free, with care provided year-round. More information and registration forms are at www.choptankhealth.org/schoolbased.
