Healthy Habits for Busy Holiday Families

Holiday celebrations, school activities, and changing schedules can make family routines harder to maintain. A few everyday habits can help children and teens stay ready to learn while giving the whole family opportunities to recharge.

Choptank Health encourages families across Caroline, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, and Dorchester counties to keep wellness part of the season, with simple steps that fit busy lives.

Protect bedtime routines. Consistent bedtimes help children get the rest they need for school and play. Encourage teens to leave time for sleep, too, even as homework, activities, and holiday plans compete for their attention.

Make handwashing a family habit. Remind children and teens to wash their hands regularly, especially before eating, and to cover coughs and sneezes. Younger children can sing “Happy Birthday” twice while washing.

Find enjoyable ways to move. A family walk, a kitchen dance break, outdoor play, or sports with friends can make movement part of the day. Activities do not have to be elaborate to give everyone a chance to stretch, play, and spend time together.

Keep balanced choices on the table. Offer fruits, vegetables, and water alongside seasonal favorites. Family meals and snacks can include holiday treats while making room for a variety of foods.

Make space for feelings. Busy schedules can feel overwhelming at any age. Keep familiar routines when possible, ask children how they are feeling, and help teens set limits and take breaks from screens and social media. A quiet conversation can give children an opening to ask for support.

Support Close to School and Home

Choptank Health’s school-based health program supports students through medical, dental, nutrition, and behavioral health services. Providers coordinate with students’ primary care providers, helping families keep their children healthy and ready to learn.

Families can enroll students in school-based health services at any time during the year. Visit www.choptankhealth.org/schoolbased for enrollment forms, locations, and contact information.

Choptank Health welcomes new patients at all locations across its five-county service area. Families can explore care options at www.choptankhealth.org.
