As Women’s Health Month highlights the importance of preventive care and early intervention, Choptank Community Health System is emphasizing access to comprehensive women’s health services—including prenatal care—delivered through its integrated primary care model across Maryland’s Mid-Shore.

This focus comes at a critical time for rural communities, where limited access to obstetric and gynecological care continues to affect maternal health and overall health outcomes.

By offering prenatal care as part of its women’s health and primary care services, Choptank Health helps reduce barriers and supports continuity—from preconception and preventive care through pregnancy and postpartum needs—so patients can receive coordinated care close to home.

“Access to women’s health services, especially prenatal care, is essential to building healthier families and stronger communities,” said Sara Rich, CEO and president of Choptank Health.

“During Women’s Health Month, we are reminded that too many rural communities still face gaps in care,” she said. “This work is about connecting patients to high-quality women’s health and prenatal care, and coordinating that care alongside primary care, behavioral health, and other supportive services—when and where it’s needed most.”

Prenatal care is available to community members, not only established Choptank Health patients. Choptank Health is welcoming new prenatal patients at Easton Health Center, Fassett Magee Medical Center in Cambridge, Federalsburg Medical Center, and Denton Health Center. Anyone who would like to learn more or be connected with care is encouraged to contact their local Choptank Health office.

Women’s health is a part of comprehensive primary care at Choptank, provided by a team of primary care providers and midwives. It is available to Choptank Health patients at all seven health centers across Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot, and Kent Counties.

These services respond to ongoing demand for accessible care in rural areas, where patients may travel long distances or face delays in receiving essential women’s health and prenatal services.

“Rural healthcare access is not just a convenience issue, it’s a public health priority,” Rich said. “By strengthening community-based care, we can improve outcomes, reduce disparities, and support healthier pregnancies and long-term wellness for women across the Mid-Shore.”

Choptank Health’s women’s health services include well-woman exams for cervical and breast cancer screenings, prenatal and postpartum care,, gynecological and pelvic exams, STI screenings, contraceptive counseling, IUD and Nexplanon placement, menopause counseling, and more.

Prenatal care services support low-risk expectant mothers throughout pregnancy, with care that is coordinated with hospital labor and delivery teams. Referrals to specialists are provided at any stage if higher-level care is needed.

In addition to in-clinic services, Choptank Health offers women’s health care through School-Based Health Centers, helping expand access for younger patients. Language interpretation services, including Spanish and Haitian-Creole, are also available to ensure inclusive, patient-centered care.

Choptank Community Health System serves more than 30,000 adults and children across Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne’s, and Talbot counties. Its integrated primary care model brings services together in one system, including women’s health and prenatal care, primary care, pediatrics, behavioral health, chronic disease management, dental services, laboratory services, and care navigation.

New primary medical care patients are welcome at all locations, with more at www.choptankhealth.org.
